You Know You Live in Africa When...

...you take showers with frogs that have found their way into your bathroom
...a trip to Lusaka is like Christmas
...your drinking water is full of yellowish brown floaties (we don't have a water filter)
...you get excited about having ti drive to the store because it means you get to leave the base for awhile
... you take 3 showers a day just to try and cool off
...you eat dinner with the lights off so the bugs don't get in your food
...when you can't buy things online because paypal doesnt associate with Africa!
...when there is no gas
...when the power goes out every night
...when you buy your bread at a casino
... killing snakes is normal
...eating termites and rats is considered yummy
...in order to see an African at night they have to smile
...you wear your sunglasses even in the shower
...your construction materials arrive on an ox cart
... a BMW has a tow hitch on the back of it
...Christmas time = 95 degrees

Rats

Stephanie and I were driving to Lusaka from the base early one morning on our way to get supplies in the city when we st oped in Mazabuka to use the toilet. As we pulled in the grocery store was just opening and the workers were sweeping the floor. Just outside the entrance door there was a trashcan that they were putting the dirt into and on top of the trashcan was a pile of dead rats that they had apparently also cleaned out of the grocery store. Now we are pretty used to rats but it still gets me when you see them running around restaurants and grocery stores. Where is the Health Department when you need them.
